Game On

"Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more..."

If this is the last game, at least it will be LOUD. What could be more fitting for a venue whose primary claim to fame is the number of decibels recorded on hand audiometers during big games?

All I can say is that I feel like making some NOISE! I've got my hat, camera, pencil, earplugs and ticket (look for me in 114, row 26) -- and I'm ready to get hoarse over the Twins one more time under the permanent gray sky. Let's do this thing!

While we're waiting for game time, faithful reader Mike has forwarded some logos for next year:

Gee, I wonder if they could find room for a World Champs logo somewhere on those...

Had anyone noticed that the 'Welcome to Target Field' lettering below the press box lights up? Check the 10:15 and then 10:30 images on webcam #2 today.

Is it just me or does Channel 29's "HD" (and I use those letters very loosely) get worse each Sunday?

Posted on October 4, 2009 at 1:13 PM by Tyler Highlight this comment 4

Channel 29 is plain horrible. I tuned in to watch the Dome Memories at noon. I could have produced a better tv program using a Pop-Up picture book.

Posted on October 4, 2009 at 1:18 PM by Steeks Highlight this comment 5

I am pretty sure that the "Welcome to Target Field" sign does not light up, it is being illuminated by the sun light hitting it.

Posted on October 4, 2009 at 1:43 PM by Josh Highlight this comment 6

Tyler it's definitely not just you. Compared to last night's broadcast on fox today's game looks like it is a recording from the mid 90's.

Steeks I completely agree that special was terrible. Would it be too much to ask to show the pregame ceremony. Plus they claim HD but it is definitely not HD!

so anyone know when and how tickets will become available for the Tuesday game?

Posted on October 4, 2009 at 2:43 PM by mplsgreg Highlight this comment 9

Rick, was there ever a conclusion about what flags will fly on the poles to the right of the roofdeck?

It took 2 years...but I think Delmon Young has finally arrived. Perhaps getting plunked in Detroit and throwing a fit at Mijares woke him up.

From La Velle:

The Twins have just announced that tickets to Tuesday’s A.L. Central tiebreaker (if needed) will go on sale immediately following today’s game against the Royals.

Keep in mind that the Dome switches over to football on Monday for the Vikes-Pack game, and that includes the ticket offices.

So if the twins can't take practice tomorrow (that is if they win this game...) Can anyone think of another ballpark in Mpls that they could go take some BP and some IF practice?

Posted on October 4, 2009 at 4:11 PM by twinlves Highlight this comment 13

So are they going to put the 1 back up and take it down again on tuesday? ;-)

tickets are about $5 more than standard for tuesday (my homerun porch seats were $26 each)

What a game. Love the numbers Jason Kubel put up this year. I can't wait to see what he'll do with that short right field porch at T.F.

That 50 Seasons logo is pretty sweet. I wonder if they'll put those on the refreshed jerseys next year?

Posted on October 4, 2009 at 4:40 PM by Lafferty Highlight this comment 18

Looking at webcam 1, there is a group of people on the plaza next to the flag poles and the flags are at the bottom of the poles. Is this apart of the farewell to the metrodome stuff going on or perhaps the legion pole has found its home?

Posted on October 4, 2009 at 5:14 PM by Eric Highlight this comment 19

it was killebrew, carew & oliva raising the flags for the twins "farewell to the metrodome" special.

I didn't really see it discussed here before, so maybe I missed the chatter ands the fact that they've been there for days, but did anybody notice that there are bases out at TF now?

That wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that the Twins won't be able to take BP at the Dome tomorrow, would it?

Not sure why they'd put the actual bases out. I know they'd have to dig the holes for them, but the bases themselves... On October 4th?

Hello all -

Greetings from the final regular-season game from the Dome. Just got back. Can someone PLEASE help me out? I think my ticket stub dropped out of my program as I was leaving the Dome! So, if ANY of you have ticket stubs from that 10/4 game that you wouldn't mind getting rid of, please email me...(click my name).

I did get the certificate - and a couple souvenir cups, and the program. So, there is some verifiable proof I was there. But if anybody has left over tickets...please contact me.

Feelings from the game:

Crowd: Amazing. Amazing being with that many people. Dome concourses I will NOT miss. 55,000 people in a small hallway like that should not be. I can only imagine what it's like when 14,000 MORE are there for Vikings games.

Game: Fabulous, and I'll stop my ranting about the "Final" game as we know it will technically NOT be. Those two three-run homers were a sight to behold with that many people.

Novelties: I wanted one of the "Final Game" T-shirts - they were sold out! Big bummer (not sure if I'm more upset about that or losing my ticket stub).

The Ceremony: Tremendous. Brought back alot of memories...especially about 1987. Matter of fact, it dawned on me, I was sitting in Sec 232 Row 19. I sat in Sec. 232 in 1986 when I went to my first Twins game with my dad. It was uncanny. My first Dome game and my last was in the same seats almost.

Out of all the Dome memories they shared throughout the whole thing, I got choked up when they talked about Kirby. "Kirbeeeeee Puckett" rang loud and clear. How I wished he could have been there. I think we all did.

Funny moments: Hrbek during the program saying "one more game, and one more chance to drink some beer!" John Gordon to Juan Buerenguer "Where's your briefcase?"

I've been in the waiting room for hours!! What the hell man? I clicked on the link for tickets the second it appeared on the twins website! What's a guy gotta do to get out of the waiting room?

Notice that they have lights on at the TF tonight. They are suppose to be running them for 100 hours straight.

Posted on October 4, 2009 at 8:14 PM by drowell Highlight this comment 24

To clarify--Looks like its the scoreboard lights, not the full light rig.. well at least not right now. Still looks cool. Check the webcam.

Posted on October 4, 2009 at 8:27 PM by drowell Highlight this comment 25

Can someone explain why it looks neon green right now on webcams?

Posted on October 4, 2009 at 8:32 PM by Josh Highlight this comment 26

From Shooter's column:

When the Twins' Target Field lights go on for the first time on Monday, they'll remain turned on for 100 continuous hours. Look for the Monday night ESPN operation in town for the Vikings-Packers game to give Target Field some national TV time.

Posted on October 4, 2009 at 8:35 PM by drowell Highlight this comment 27

Josh, I believe the neon green is from the scoreboard. They need to "burn in" the board, so it will be displaying solid colors for a period of time. At least that is what someone told me.

Posted on October 4, 2009 at 8:52 PM by DreDogg Highlight this comment 28

DreDogg, I think you mean that they are doing a "break in" on the video board to prevent "burn in". Honestly I have no idea if that is why, but on new plasma TV's you are supposed to do a break in period in order to prevent image burn in. Just a guess as to why they are displaying solid green.

Posted on October 4, 2009 at 9:01 PM by ace Highlight this comment 29

That is an epic neon green on webcam 1

Posted on October 4, 2009 at 9:17 PM by Deenels Highlight this comment 30

They must be testing solid colors on the scoreboard right now. I'm behind right field, and the colors are alternating between green, red, blue and white. It's kinda pretty.

luke - same here. not going to lie.....i got a bit misty-eyed during the kirby puckett portion of the all-metrodome team introductions. it took me back to being 8 years old (1987) and 12 years old (1991) again and listening to the games on WCCO radio (herb carneal) with my dad and grandpa in my grandpa's front yard on the east side of st. paul. great memories. the post-game ceremony was first class all the way. loved it.

dredogg - you are correct. they did the same practice of "burning in" the HD video board at the gophers new football stadium this summer.

let's go twins. beat those tigers on tuesday!

About the ceremony...did anyone record it on their TV? I'm trying to find it online, but to no avail.

Posted on October 4, 2009 at 11:04 PM by DreDogg Highlight this comment 35

wow, what a weekend! I was lucky enough to be at all three games and I will be at Tuesday's game as well.

The atmosphere was simply amazing, especially today with the homer hankies and the farewell hoopla, with the former players in attendance.

What a touching tribute to have Kirby Jr take down the "1" for the Target Field countdown. It was also a nice feature to have Oliva, Killebrew and Carew live at Target Field raising the flags at the future Capital of Twins territory (and by the way, that celebration sign in CF looked pretty nice on the live TV, its very large and will definitely be iconic to Target Field)

I don't think those top 10 Metrodome memories should surprise anyone. All amazing memories.

The current playoff push definitely took away from the Farewell Celebration, but that is a good problem to have. It didn't even feel like the "final game" in the Metrodome as we all know there will be one more game there on Tuesday.

The concourses were absolutely ridiculous this weekend, what a chaotic mass of humanity in the concourse and restrooms.

I hope to get some pics posted on baseball fever this week.

Gomer says "breach". Yes indeed. Four hours sleep.

Here's the extended quote -- albeit in a somewhat modified context:

KING GARDY (before the game):
Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the Dome up with our roster dead.
In golf there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of baseball blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;

"You talk about the magic, the aura, but what really makes a stadium is the fans. Concrete doesn't talk back to you. Chairs don't talk back to you. It's the people who are there, day in, day out, that makes the place magic."
